Operations Director, Business Advisory

Consultancy, UK

A strategic thinker with a focus on transformation, Sukhy Duggal comes from a background in accounting and advisory roles across public sector and infrastructure. Having joined Mace in February 2024, Sukhy’s passion for continuous learning and leveraging capabilities across our various engines ensures that he is well-placed to drive real place-based change.

How did you get into what you do?

I began my career as an accountant, before moving more into advisory work and finding myself increasingly in roles involving infrastructure and the public sector. I eventually left accounting to take on a role providing advisory services to local authorities’ and central government finance teams. Through this I was determined to help make positive change to the communities we serve.

After a few years, I found myself working within the transportation division at Atkins, where I served a wide range of clients including London Boroughs, the NHS and TfL. The more I became immersed in the world of transportation and Place, the more I became driven by the opportunity to make a tangible difference in local authorities and central government initiatives. I am passionate about Place, and how an holistic view can help shape economic, social and well being development for our communities.

What do you enjoy most about your current role at Mace?

I love having the opportunity to think strategically and creatively, exploring how we can enhance our services to have a greater impact on our clients. Whether it’s partnering with a local authority, an educational trust, or with the NHS, I can drive real change at Mace. Since joining, I’ve been on a journey of discovery and learning from those around me which has made me even more excited to make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve.

How do you redefine the boundaries of ambition?

For me, redefining ambition means making a direct impact on how communities live, work, and play together. It's not just about dreaming big; it's about leveraging our capabilities across our various engines to craft tangible solutions that transform communities. Our commitment to responsible business is ingrained in every decision we make and this helps me get out of bed every morning, inspired to try to make a difference.

Why Mace?

When it comes to delivering iconic projects that shape the skyline of London, Mace has always stood out to me. Living in London, I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of Mace's work, from the Shard to the London Eye. Its track record speaks volumes, but what truly sets Mace apart for me is the unwavering commitment to innovation and collaboration. My admiration for Mace deepened as I saw its involvement at a government level, particularly during pivotal moments like when UK businesses rallied to showcase our capabilities to Ukraine. It was inspiring to witness how Mace seamlessly bridged global expertise with local impact. I knew then that it was the place for me.

What motivates you everyday?

What motivates me every day is the opportunity to learn, listen, and contribute value in everything I do. The tangible impact Mace makes on the places we serve, and the lives of the people within them, is what truly excites me about my role.

Having lived in London since 1998, and having raised my children here, the capital is really important to me and I have a personal interest in making things better. I think London is a great city. Whether you’re working, learning, or taking in the sights and culture, it’s a true capital and I want it to continue to succeed at being a global centre of excellence. My role at Mace allows me to play a part in that.

What skills do you need to be good at your job?

You need to have strong interpersonal skills and an empathetic approach. It is crucial that you communicate effectively to foster meaningful connections with both colleagues and clients. As part of such a complex organisation, adaptability and active listening are also central to what I do and allow me to navigate diverse situations and understand different perspectives. Most importantly, I have found that my passion for continuous learning encourages me to stay up to date with the latest developments, ensuring that I can harness all the great things we do to make a tangible difference through Place.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, including our dog, Mac. As a die-hard fan of Wolverhampton Wanderers, my passion for football runs deep. It keeps me connected to my roots in Wolverhampton and provides endless excitement as a season ticket holder alongside my family.

Beyond sports, I am deeply committed to giving back to the community through my roles as a scout leader and a school governor. Being able to make a positive impact outside of work brings me immense joy and I am grateful for the chance to contribute to the well-being of my own local community.
