Redefining boundaries on ambitious projects that transform the lives of millions, Paul heads up the life science, pharma and research division of Mace’s Interiors business.

How did you get into what you do?
I started my career as an apprentice in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. After graduating, I worked for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) setting up secure communications networks in the Whitehall buildings. I was then promoted to Professional Technology Officer at just 19 - one of the youngest ever to hold this position at the MOD!

My career in the life sciences sector really took off when, around 20 years ago now, I worked with the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge, a world-leading genomics research institute. I designed, planned and commissioned everything from nursery extensions, to high containment research labs. Life sciences is a very dynamic and forward-thinking sector, and so I knew then that was something I wanted to be a part of.

What do you enjoy most about your current role at Mace?

No two days are the same. One day I find myself solving complex architectural and engineering challenges, the next day I am mentoring the next generation of business leaders.

I’m in a very fortunate position where I work with inspiring clients on ambitious projects that make a real difference to people’s lives. That’s a very rewarding experience.

What has been your proudest achievement at Mace so far?

I joined Mace in 2021 and my proudest moment to date has been the day we won our first project with Imperial College London. The success was down to a great team effort. Everyone was going above and beyond. And this was reflected in the amazing feedback we received from the client. Our enthusiasm and knowledge really set us apart from the competition and for me, this is how we redefine the boundaries of ambition.

Why Mace?

Mace is the number one contractor in London. Health, safety and wellbeing, sustainability, digital and modern methods of construction are just a few areas where we are taking the lead. So when I had the opportunity to lead life sciences projects for Mace Interiors, I really didn’t think twice.

What motivates you everyday?

The clients, exciting projects and above all, the great people I work with every day!

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I love music. I used to DJ, playing in London nightclubs with school friends. The highpoint for me was in the summer of '98 when I was invited play in Ibiza - an experience I will never forget!

What are you passionate about outside of work?

My family are front and centre of everything I do both professionally and personally. So spending time with them and helping my children as they develop into young adults is my biggest passion. I also enjoy keeping fit, fishing and have been an avid supporter of Millwall FC for over 25 years.
