Mace appointed to oversee the three-year redevelopment of Ahmedabad Railway Station

Mace has been appointed, as part of a joint venture with SYSTRA, by India’s Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) to transform the mega rail station located at the heart of Ahmedabad City.

The largest railway station in the Gujarat state, Ahmedabad Railway Station sees 160 trains pass through it daily, supporting the movement of 120,000 passengers – this is expected to rise to 300,000 daily passengers by 2060.

The three-year redevelopment programme will see the transformation of the station into a modern multi modal transport hub, combining Indian Railways, Metro Rail and High-Speed Rail, as well as commercial, residential and retail offerings.

The programme also includes the construction of associated infrastructure and the integration of local heritage monuments, including the two minarets, Brick Minar and Jhulta Minar.

The redevelopment project covers almost 40 hectares and is expected to be completed in two phases.

Under the Project Management Consultancy Services (PMS) contract, the JV will be responsible for design review, architectural controls, quality assurance, safety, health and environmental compliance, interface management, project progress monitoring, invoice verification, installation, testing, and commissioning and handover.

Mace has been working in India since 2011, leading the industry in digital transformation as it delivers accountability-based outcomes for private clients like Reliance, Delhi Land and Finance (DLF), Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), Brookfield, and IKEA. Its portfolio also includes Mumbai International Airport - Terminal 2 and many transportation, commercial, retail, sport, hospitality, luxury residential and urban infrastructure developments.

The company’s growing transportation expertise has seen it recently be appointed on many complex international projects including Metrolinx’s Scarborough Subway Extension and Yonge North Subway Extension in Toronto, Canada. It was also recently selected as Delivery Partner for the Hudson Tunnel Project alongside Parsons and Arcadis.

Hemant Sandu, Country Manager of Mace India, said:

India is transforming its station infrastructure, and this will greatly enhance the end user experience. With passenger numbers expected to eclipse the already large footfall at the station, this redevelopment programme is much called for.

We will implement our global expertise in delivering large transportation redevelopments and give back to the people of Ahmedabad City by transforming their station into a modern, fit-for-purpose transportation hub.

We look forward to working with the RLDA and alongside our partners to make this ambitious programme a reality.”

Davendra Dabasia, Chief Operating Officer of Mace Consult, said:

“With more than a decade of working with the biggest private companies and most influential government institutions in India, we are honoured to be appointed to help deliver the redevelopment of Ahmedabad Railway Station, the largest railway station in the Gujarat state.

“Our team of experts in India are well positioned to work with global and local stakeholders to transform the mega railway station into a modern multi modal transport hub.

“Working with SYSTRA, for India’s Rail Land Development Authority, is a testament to our commitment of redefining the boundaries of ambition in Asia Pacific’s built environment.”
