The lessons ‘new’ New Towns can learn from the original: New Civil Engineer speaks to Mace Consult

Stevenage was designated as the first new town in 1946 and is undergoing a £1bn regeneration programme involving new homes, offices, retail and public spaces.

The programme is being delivered through a public-private partnership, by Mace Consult, and New Civil Engineer recently visited to learn what lessons ‘new’ new towns can learn from the original.

The in-depth article, which features the views of the leader of Stevenage Borough Council and its assistant director of regeneration, highlights whether, in regenerating or delivering a new town, key factors are a guiding mind, taking a programmatic approach and planning for the long term.

Louise Sunderland, Head of Cities and Places for Mace Consult, sums this up simply when it comes to risks and opportunities: “because when the new towns come to fruition, five or 10 years down the line, you might need to pivot...”
