At the heart of the UK’s naval capability, Babcock’s Devonport Royal Dockyard, the largest naval support site in Western Europe and the UK’s main facility for nuclear submarine maintenance and defueling, is undergoing a once-in-a-generation transformation. Mace is proud to contribute toward this project, which is being led by Babcock, and is set to transform the infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of the UK Royal Navy.

The Devonport regeneration is not just a series of upgrades; it’s a leap into the future.  We’re sharing our industry knowledge to support Babcock in developing one of their new cutting-edge facilities for the Astute class submarines, which have replaced the Trafalgar submarines. This once-in-a-generation overhaul is vital for maintaining the UK’s strategic nuclear deterrent and bolstering the UK Royal Navy’s operational capabilities.

This specific project at Devonport involves extensive demolition and construction, including the removal of deteriorating infrastructure and the creation of new maintenance and operational facilities. The team, working as part of an integrated Babcock led team, and drawing on previous experience in managing time sensitive projects, identified opportunities to streamline early-stage activities and enable a prompt start to works. We are assisting in the coordination of efforts with multiple stakeholders, including Babcock, the Ministry of Defence, and other key partners. Clear communication among these stakeholders is paramount to the project’s success, ensuring that Babcock’s Devonport facility is equipped to support the Royal Navy’s fleet for decades to come.

At the centre of this multifaceted programme is a primary goal of establishing a new, modern standards, efficient, deep-maintenance berthing facility in Devonport to support A-Class boats. This will enable submarines to begin their maintenance, then enter a dry dock to finish their maintenance, and return to sea in the shortest and safest possible time.

As we advance through this multi-year development programme, we remain dedicated to excellence and to supporting the UK’s critical national defence objectives. The Devonport regeneration is more than a project; it’s a testament to our ability to support delivery of transformative infrastructure that meets the highest standards of innovation and sustainability.
