Caerphilly Castle, one of Wales’ most outstanding national landmarks, has stood for over 750 years as a defining feature of the local landscape. Originally constructed in 1268 during the Anglo-Norman expansion, the fortress is now recognised as a Grade I listed site and a vital part of Wales’ historic environment. As part of Cadw’s long-term vision to revitalise Wales’ historic landmarks, Mace was appointed to lead the regeneration of this Grade I listed site, providing project management and cost consultancy services from the early design stages.
The five-year programme has delivered a wide range of conservation and enhancement works, carefully balancing historical integrity with modern visitor needs. Key interventions included structural repairs to the Watergate and Great Hall roof, installation of underfloor heating and new flooring for events, and improved accessibility through new ramps and bridges.
Interpretation works have brought the castle’s story to life through immersive audiovisual installations, bespoke graphics, and tactile fitout elements. The creation of a biodiverse wildflower garden and upgraded visitor amenities further enrich the experience.
Throughout the project, Caerphilly Castle remained open to the public, requiring Mace’s multidisciplinary team to navigate the complexities of working in a live heritage environment. This demanded seamless coordination between stakeholders, contractors, and conservation experts to ensure safety, minimise disruption, and maintain a high-quality visitor experience.
The result is a revitalised Caerphilly Castle, ready to inspire, educate, and welcome visitors for generations to come.
