Groundbreaking wheeled solar power technology

  • Expanded IT capacity by 6 megawatts, bringing the total to 10 megawatts across three new data halls.
  • Achieved zero water consumption for IT infrastructure with a Water Usage Effectiveness rating of 0.
  • The first African data centre to integrate wheeled solar power technology.

As a cornerstone of Africa’s digital infrastructure, the Africa Data Centres’ CPT 1 campus has played a vital role in supporting the continent’s growing demand for data services since its inception in 2010.

In response to the rapid acceleration of digital transformation, Mace led the successful expansion of the facility as project management consultant, delivering a future-ready solution that sets new standards in capacity, sustainability, and innovation.

The project introduced three state-of-the-art data halls, adding 6 megawatts of IT capacity and expanding the total to 10 megawatts.

Spanning 3,000 square metres, the new halls include 1,000 additional racks, with one hyperscale hall designed for a single tenant and two colocation halls offering flexible solutions for multiple clients. This scalable design ensures the facility can meet diverse and evolving business needs.

Sustainability was at the heart of the expansion. CPT 1 now ranks among South Africa’s most efficient data centres, boasting a Water Usage Effectiveness of 0 – meaning zero water consumption for IT operations – and an industry-leading Power Usage Effectiveness.

The project also marks a historic milestone as the first in Africa to incorporate wheeled solar power technology, underscoring Mace’s commitment to pioneering sustainable solutions.

This expansion not only enhances Africa’s data capabilities but also exemplifies the power of innovative design and engineering excellence. Mace is proud to have delivered a project that will help shape a more connected, resilient, and sustainable digital future for the continent.
