Unjulee Karadia

Project Manager

Consultancy, North America

Unjulee joined the Mace Graduate Development Programme in 2013 and went on to be awarded graduate of the year. After 4 years as part of the Central & South West Business Unit, Unjulee made the move over to Mace North America, working on projects for the Foreign Commonwealth Office at the British Embassy in Washington D.C.

Why Mace?

I saw the range of projects Mace was involved with and the international element to the business. When I went in for interview I was astounded by the offices and how vibrant it felt – I just got a good feeling about it and the interview was as much about me as it was about my technical background. I knew that if Mace placed this much importance on getting the right people then the opportunity was definitely right for me. Mace have been extremely encouraging and supportive about providing a platform for me to progress and enabling mobility across the Group.

How did you find the Mace Graduate Development Programme?
When I first started I was shadowing my line manager, absorbing everything I could. I quickly got given tasks that grew and grew in responsibility, and the sense of responsibility, no matter how small, really made me feel like I owned part of the delivery of the project which was really rewarding.

I was lucky enough to get to work on a range of projects that allowed me to see all stages of the project lifecycle. It meant I was able to take different elements of learning from them all.

The graduate scheme was everything I wanted and more. It was very involved and there were so many courses that we did that were brilliantly timed with the practical hands on experience we were getting in our day-to-day roles.

What has been your proudest achievement at Mace?
I was chuffed to be awarded as one of the graduates of the year – it was really great recognition! I was also invited to a dinner in 2015 at the Shangri-La Hotel in The Shard. There were just 16 of us, including the CEO and founders – a very inspiring experience.

“Work is so much easier when you work with very inspiring people around you.”

What are you passionate about outside of work?
I love travelling and did a lot before joining Mace. Even whilst at Mace I’ve been to Bali, lots of Europe and Singapore. I also climbed Kilimanjaro – it was the hardest physical challenge of my life but a brilliant one!
What was your childhood ambition?
I wanted to be a ballerina – so quite a drastic change in footwear from ballet shoes to site boots.
What drives you on?
The people around me are so encouraging – looking at them and seeing where I could be makes me more passionate and ambitious about what I do. Work is so much easier when you work with very inspiring people around you that help build you up and support you.
If your teenage self could see you now, what would she think?
Look at her go! As much as I’ve always wanted to do something great with my career, I never realised I would end up where I am and have such a passion for it – I’m thrilled I’m here!
