Harriet Booth

Payroll and Benefits Assistant

Human Resources, UK

Harriet Booth joined Mace as a temp before securing a permanent contract in the Mace People department. She has a love of working closely with people across the business and now has clear career aspirations at Mace.

How did you get into what you do?

I did a degree in journalism but decided that as a career it wasn’t for me. After I graduated I moved from Manchester to London to look for work. I initially worked as a nanny to five children for eight months before landing a temporary role at Mace to work on an internal audit. A vacancy then came up within the Mace People team and I’ve now been working in payroll and benefits for over a year.

What career aspirations do you have at Mace?

I’d never thought about HR as an option before I had taken on the temporary role in Mace but it’s definitely the career for me. When I did my degree I’d always gravitate towards the human interest stories so I guess it’s no surprise that I’m working in a job that means I get to interact with people all day.

I sit near the HR business partners and have learnt a lot about what they do and that’s where I’ve set my sights. I’ll be taking part in a mentoring scheme soon so I can learn more about the role from the experts and build up my skills.

What do you enjoy most about your current role at Mace?

My team make the job really enjoyable. Everyone is so supportive and we all work well together. I also enjoy the opportunities I have to meet so many different people across the company.

I was made to feel really welcome at Mace from day one and the support I’ve received has really helped me to settle in and develop. I really feel part of something exciting and it’s clear that Mace is a company that I can grow with.

What skills do you need to be good at your job?

You need to be organised and be able to manage deadlines, and you have to have really good attention to detail. I work closely with lots of people every day - the job suits personable people who enjoy problem solving.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

I’m from the countryside originally so when London living gets a bit much I like to travel a little outside of London and go for long walks.

I also love South America and have spent quite a bit of time travelling around Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Columbia. I can’t wait to go back at some point but I’ll save some money next time so I can spend more than £1 on each meal!
