Nestled in the heart of Imperial’s South Kensington campus, the Sherfield Building is set to transform the iconic Great Hall into a versatile, multipurpose space. Since its doors were first opened by Queen Elizabeth II in the late 1960s, the Great Hall has hosted a range of social events and welcomed numerous famous faces, including Elton John and David Bowie. As the largest bookable space on Imperial’s campus, its transformation will enhance usability and create an invaluable asset for both academic and social purposes.

The redevelopment includes the delivery of three flexible lecture theatre spaces, a new mezzanine level, upgraded washroom facilities, improved circulation routes and additional storage across levels 2 and 3. It is being delivered within a live operational environment, ensuring the building remains fully functional throughout construction.

The 4,230 sq ft scheme will feature three acoustically separate lecture theatres divided by motorised partitions and fitted with semi-automatic retractable seating. Designed to convert the room with ease, these systems provide maximum acoustic insulation between each space while maintaining the hall’s function as a major event venue. From summer balls and presidential addresses to orchestral concerts, exhibitions and exams, the 584 seat venue will provide a space built for the future and for all.

Refurbished with the future in mind, environmental measures have been meticulously monitored through the selection of materials and systems installed. This includes energy efficient lighting, upgraded sanitary installations and improvements that support long term operational performance.

For the 23,000 students across Imperial in the UK alone, fostering an inclusive environment was paramount. Echoing our own and Imperial’s vision, ensuring all spaces are accessible and sustainable is a major priority. In partnership with AccessAble, new features include a wheelchair-accessible lift, stage, and teaching areas fitted with hearing loops integrated into the AV system.

With community as the cornerstone of Imperial’s ethos, breathing a new lease of life into the Great Hall means that more memories can be created for generations to come, and we’re honoured to contribute to this journey.
