Mace was appointed to deliver Phase 1A of the Western Precinct Development at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The project forms a key part of Airports Company South Africa’s (ACSA) wider Aerotropolis strategy, aimed at enhancing the airport’s role as a catalyst for economic growth in South Africa and the region.

Delivered as a turn-key development by the ACSA Western Precinct Consortium, the scheme comprises over 33,000m² of premium office space across 10 storeys, designed to house the new ACSA head office.

Sustainability was central to the project’s vision, with the team successfully achieving a 4-star rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa, underpinned by high-performance plant and state-of-the-art finishes.

The development also includes a five-level basement and a dedicated data centre hall. Above, the landscaped podium level connects three office towers, creating a vibrant and accessible precinct. As part of the works, existing road infrastructure and intersections were upgraded to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

The project was delivered in a live airport environment, requiring meticulous planning and stakeholder engagement to maintain operations and security throughout. The successful completion of the project marked a significant milestone in the transformation of the airport precinct.
