Mace Utilities is the consultancy sector that provides specialist “utility management services” (UMS) to Mace Group and external clients, and together with our delivery partners has the capability to arrange all statutory utility related contestable works across the project lifecycle. Our specialist services are provided as part of Mace’s integrated team to manage and support the successful delivery of the statutory undertakers works required for the delivery of the building.

UMS works on a diverse range of projects, from offices, residential, retail, aviation, transport and urban regeneration projects throughout the UK and they all impact on statutory utility apparatus. Working within a project team either through Mace construction or directly for clients, the role will be recognised as the utilities package manager responsible for managing all aspects of utilities management. The average value of utilities works on a major project is approximately £3m but can exceed £20m. You will use project management skills to stay within scope to provide consultancy services necessary to manage (throughout the lifecycle process) all aspects of statutory utility assets and connections on construction projects predominantly in London and SE.

This role however is based on a project in Derby.

Generally the work is in the public highway and up to the supply meter; it does not include internal private supplies, however cross-over is usually inevitable.

To help move along sometimes logistically complex site issues, liaison with many internal and external stakeholders is required. Mace M&E managers will especially call on your support to ensure statutory supplies interface successfully with the work they are procuring on site.

This involves understanding the client’s requirements, building a strategy to manage and deliver best value, interfacing with utility companies to develop and agree preferred solutions and manage to a successful conclusion with support from our delivery partner.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing new temporary and permanent service connections.
  • Disconnecting of existing services.
  • Abandoning the existing utility apparatus.
  • Managing the diversion of existing utility assets.
  • Protecting of existing utility assets.
  • Providing data collection and surveys.
  • Drawing development.
  • Providing reports.
  • Managing design procurement and technical review.
  • Overseeing the programme development and planning.
  • Monitoring and management of delivery of our services against the programme.
  • Managing commercial review.
  • Providing utility asset construction methodology review.
  • Overseeing the on-site management of installation/surveys.
  • Managing the hand-over.
  • Providing stakeholder engagement management.
  • Reviewing the method statement and safety risk assessments.
About you

  • A recognised professional qualification in project management or M&E management, although HNC equivalent with appropriate experience will also suffice.
  • Proven experience working in the construction/utilities sector and managing projects.
  • Project management disciplines including value management and programme development and monitoring, ensuring delivery against key milestone targets.
  • Familiarity and background of the utilities and construction industry, in particular general knowledge of water, sewerage, gas, electric, telecoms copper and fiber distribution systems, including supply application and disconnection procedures.
  • An understanding of procurement opportunities to deliver contestable works.
  • Strong negotiating skills with the ability to secure the required outcomes when dealing with people who are process led and not contracted into the project.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in creating, managing and maintaining relationships, able to converse to clients and peers to director level.
  • Self-motivated, organised and capable of working under own direction in a pressured construction environment.
  • Acknowledgement of responsibilities and acceptance of ownership.
  • Ability to direct teams and chair meetings.
