Sheffield One - Creative Sheffield

  • Mace supported Sheffield One to deliver an extensive regeneration programme comprising seven key projects.

Sheffield City Centre has undergone a dramatic change in the last decade. Although it previously underperformed in its role as the region's economy driver, it offered huge potential and significant development opportunities. The master plan, managed by the Urban Regeneration Company (URC) Sheffield One, provided the catalyst for recovery and redevelopment of the city with seven key projects, from the refurbishment of the train station and a £500m retail quarter to the St. Paul's Place/Heart of the City project which provided high specification offices, and a 32-storey residential building. Other projects included the Sheffield Digital Campus and an integrated transport system. Comprising Sheffield City Council, English Partnerships and Yorkshire Forward, provided a joined-up approach to regeneration and gave the private sector one single organisation. Mace was commissioned as programme manager.

Mace's role was to manage the overarching risks, actions and issues and to maintain the key interfaces and report to the client. Mace independently scrutinised partners' project management functions on behalf of the client, ensuring that different components of the regeneration programme were coordinated and rigorously managed to minimise problems and slippage. Mace also helped to ensure coordination and communication, resolve sticking points and devise contingency plans. In 2008, the URC changed its focus to economic regeneration and thus became the UK's first city development company, Creative Sheffield. Mace was also integral in managing this transformation.
