Information

Mace has worked alongside client Safeway to deliver 105 major refit and extension works to stores nationwide. Three regional delivery teams consisting of professional disciplines including project, cost and supply chain management, programme planning and mechanical and electrical services delivered the projects.

A key success of the project was in the coordination and excellent working relationships formed between delivery teams and Safeways stakeholders. 70 projects were delivered within the first 12 months of the programme.

Each project had a value of circa £1m, reduced from an initial £2.5m budget. The scope of works was driven locally with individual store solutions agreed with the customer. Each programme was 4-6 weeks on site, maximising speed of construction, minimising impact, offering optimum speed to market for the new retail departments on trading.

Key features of the programme included:

  • Integration of FM/Maintenance works including refrigeration replacements and upgrades as part of refit delivery vehicle.
  • Strategy was to protect existing store customer base, with aim to introduce new customers post refit phase.
  • Refit whilst store trading continues.
  • Minimum sales disruption during refit works.
  • Introduce quick wins with minimum disruption and cost.
  • Fast track programme.
  • Immediate sales uplifts to refitted stores to maximise return on capital invested.
  • Multiple stakeholder liaison and coordination.
  • Intranet development for document management, communication and MI.
  • Key delivery process allowing customer clarity early in the process for scheme, cost and programme predictability.
