All's well that ends well for the Royal Shakespeare Theatre
Mace is proud to be appointed construction manager on the Royal Shakespeare Company's Theatre transformation project which aims to provide the best theatre in the world for the performance of Shakespeare's works.
Our innovative approach and flexibility is already assisting the RSC to achieve its vision which involves partial demolition and rebuild of the Grade II* listed theatre to provide a thrust stage auditorium, together with associated back of house and management facilities.
The main auditorium is being completely demolished and rebuilt with a new 1,000-seat thrust stage, the largest thrust stage with a tiered auditorium in the world. This requires extensive piling and deep excavation in poor ground adjacent to the River Avon.
The new performance space brings actors and audience closer together with the distance of the seat furthest from the stage being reduced from 29 metres to 15 metres.
A new tower will be constructed which will give visitors a platform from which to view Shake-speare's town: his birthplace, school and the church in which he is buried.
Externally, the reconstructed theatre will include improved access and a refurbished walkway alongside the River Avon. During the works the Royal Shakespeare Company will continue to perform in Stratford, at the nearby Courtyard Theatre.
These works will be carried out within the retained art deco structures making for an extremely congested site. Mace was selected as we excel in delivering a construction management ser-vice on complex projects with similar characteristics.
You can find out more about the progress of the project at the RSC's own "Transformation" site, below.
