After the mines

Mace was commissioned by Channel 4 Television and Wakefield Metropolitan Borough Council in 2003 to provide project and programme management support to an innovative urban regeneration project involving the community of Castleford, a small mining town in the North East of England.

Mace's role is in coordinating over 12 schemes that comprise the Castleford Regeneration Project, including the construction of a 131m span, £4.8m pedestrian bridge across the river, the creation of a village green in the outlying village of New Fryston, a new railway underpass linking the central marketplace with nearby residential areas, and the Cutsyke Play-Forest community improvement scheme.

Mace's role is to coordinate and manage work on more than a dozen schemes throughout the town - all of which were selected by the local community and, in many cases, delivered with the physical support of volunteer workers from the town.

Channel 4 / Talkback TV have been closely monitoring the progress of this regeneration programme through its various stages and are planning to screen a five-part series once the works are completed. The Castleford Project has also attracted additional support from Yorkshire Forward, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, English Partnerships, and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.
