Nationwide Data Centre

  • Nationwide data centre, delivered by Mace's experienced technology team.

Long-standing Mace client Nationwide Building Society required a data centre facility to supplement its existing technology centre, with a disaster recovery facility that would accommodate more than 80 people. In addition to supporting the client throughout a land purchase deal and numerous planning applications as employer's agent, Mace provided an integrated service offer including planning, project and construction management, contracting, sustainability consultancy and IT consultancy / data centre optimisation.

To keep construction on programme, Mace initially provided a project and construction management service, which allowed the site to be cleared and the foundations to be laid while the design was being finalised. Once the design was fixed, Mace negotiated a design and build fixed price contract, which transferred residual risk away from the client and provided cost certainty. An extensive value engineering exercise resulted in construction cost savings in excess of £8m, and the new data centre was delivered on time, and circa £2m below budget. The project was designed to achieve a BREEAM very good certification and set a new benchmark for sustainability with 100 percent of site-generated waste timber diverted away from landfill. With five starts in British Safety Council health and safety, and environmental audits, the project team also won a Sword of Honour in 2009 and Globe of Honour in 2010.
