Extensive damage to the Royal Exchange Theatre during the 1996 IRA bombing in Manchester made the Grade II listed theatre effectively redundant and in need of extensive renovations to restore the building to its former grandeur.

As construction manager Mace was appointed to deliver the technically demanding project controlling the costs and adopting innovative construction techniques.

The theatre sits within a seven-sided glass and steel structure and is a pure theatre in the round with the stage area surrounded on all sides and above by seating.
