ARK Schools was established in 2004 to help break the cycle of educational underachievement in some of the UK's most challenging urban areas by developing a network of high achieving academies. Globe Academy in Southwark is one of several new academies sponsored by ARK and Mace was appointed by the Department of Children Schools and Families (DCSF) to provide a construction delivery service on the development. The complex project comprised a large element of new build plus the sensitive refurbishment of existing buildings, all of which were listed, while the school remained open and operational.
Before work could get underway on the construction of two new buildings and the refurbishment of several others, Mace had to undertake significant enabling works, including the excavation and removal of a Victorian graveyard, and the demolition of buildings. Works were heavily phased to accommodate the existing school, and the team implemented a thorough communications plan to keep all stakeholders informed as the project progressed. In addition to liaising closely with the sub-contractors, the Mace team also provided an aftercare service designed to support the school as it took possession of its new buildings.
