Brunel University | Mace
Many universities need to release funds for much-needed renewal or expansion, and in many cases their estates are their most valuable assets. Brunel University decided to consolidate three campuses into one in 2002 and appointed Mace to provide overall programme management for its ten-year masterplan. Since then, Mace has helped the university develop its aspirations for the 366,000 square metre site by delivering it with minimum disruption and releasing the greatest possible value, making capital investment savings of £5m to date. Mace has also provided project management for a variety of new buildings, including 17 halls of residence for 1,400 students, and has completed these projects on time and under budget.
Individual projects within the masterplan were designed to be flexible, adaptable and future proof so that if necessary they could be let on an open market. They have also been designed and delivered with significant consideration to lifecycle cost and the operation and maintenance of the building, which has led to the achievement of a BREEAM excellent rating. Mace’s experience of major rationalisation of property portfolios coupled with an understanding of the academic world has allowed it to add real value. All projects have involved essential stakeholder engagement and Mace has used the experience to develop a delivery model that can be repeated at any university.
