Mace Group develops Lekki Airport masterplan

27/05/2009

Mace Group's International Development Unit (IDU) team has been appointed by the Nigerian Ministry of Commerce and Industry as project manager for the preparation of a masterplan for a new $600m international airport in Lagos.

The new airport will be built next to the 16,500 hectare Lekki free trade zone and will cater for the ongoing development of the south-east region of Lagos State. The Lekki corridor is a naturally formed peninsula between Lagos lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean east of Lagos and is considered one of the most dynamic future growth areas in Lagos State.

Owned and operated by the Federal Government, the existing Lagos Murtala Muhammed Airport in Ikeja to the north of the city currently caters for approximately five million passengers per year. In addition to being too congested and outdated, its geographical location renders it unsuitable for the anticipated expansion of Lagos which is set to become a mega-city within the next 10-20 years. The state governor believes the new airport will provide much needed facilities for air passengers travelling to or via Lagos and also act as a major catalyst to the rapid growth of the neighbouring Lekki free trade zone.

Mace has been appointed to conduct an eight month masterplan study in conjunction with design partners Pascall+Watson and Scott Wilson. Concept options were presented to the client in mid-December 2008 and a further presentation is planned for early June 2009, with completion of the masterplan scheduled for July 2009.

While completing this work, the team is also negotiating its continued involvement in the project, seeking the appointment to provide programme, project and design management services for the next stage of the project which is scheduled to get underway later this year. It is hoped that this will be followed by an appointment to supervise construction of the entire airport development which the governor expects to be operational by 2013.
