A Mace project team acting as employer's agent and cost consultant has completed and handed over a flagship store for Sainsbury's at London Colney. The 80,000 square foot store was subject to a £10m refurbishment that took just 14 weeks and was handed over in time for the 8th November opening, in time for the busy Christmas trading period.
The new store features all the latest concepts including fresh food counters, pharmacy and electrical counters and a 30,000 square foot general merchandising/non foods area (the largest in any Sainsbury's store). The Sainsbury's and Starbucks restaurant was repositioned to a new mezzanine floor which is serviced by a glass lift and staircase. The store also incorporates a grocery online home delivery service.
In addition to the new features the store was completely refitted with new shelving, refrigeration and checkouts, the warehouse and offices were refurbished and the car park was resurfaced. All works were completed while the store remained open with the exception of a six day closure at the end of the project.
Key account director John Kinney said: "This was a great opportunity for the Mace team working in conjunction with the Sainsbury's team to deliver a challenging and high profile project which was professionally executed and delivered on time, within budget and to the client's satisfaction."
Sainsbury's development director David Sheehan said: "Huge congratulations to all the team involved here, especially as this store was completed on a compressed timeline." Sainsbury's commercial director Neil Sachdev added: "You have all demonstrated great leadership, ownership and above all commitment to drive change to enable us to make Sainsbury's great again. You have all done a fantastic job, thank you and well done."
