Tate has announced that the international consultancy and construction company Mace has been appointed as construction manager on the new development of Tate Modern.
Designed by internationally celebrated architects Herzog & de Meuron, the new development will create a spectacular new building adjoining Tate Modern to the south, on the foundation of the former power station's oil tanks. This will be Britain's most important new building for culture since the creation of the Royal National Theatre in 1976 and the British Library in 1998. The new building will increase Tate Modern's size by 60% adding approximately 21,000 square metres of new space.
Work is expected to start on site mid 2009 and it is hoped that the new building will be completed in time for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.
Alex Beard, deputy director of Tate, commented, "We are delighted with the appointments to the Transforming Tate Modern project team. We now have a world-class team in place and with the recent funding announcement from government, we are moving successfully into a new phase for the project."
Gareth Lewis, Mace Group board director responsible for construction, said: "We are delighted to have been confirmed as the construction manager for the Tate Modern extension project. We have a long and successful history with Tate and with the regeneration of the Southbank, which makes this appointment very special to us. It is a fantastic design and we are delighted to be part of such an exciting and challenging project."
