AJ Roundtable: What makes truly sustainable offices?

Commercial offices... most people's typical impressions are of tall, multi-storey buildings, making heavy use of light and heat - hardly poster children for the emerging requirements of sustainable building. But is that all about to change?

On 13th September, Mace hosted a roundtable event, chaired by Architects Journal’s sustainability editor Hattie Hartman, which gave industry figures involved in the Ropemaker Place project the opportunity to discuss the future of sustainability in the commercial office sector.

The panel discussion was attended by Jonathan Foster, project director on Ropemaker Place, Arlo Mills of Sense, and representatives from British Land as well as other companies that comprised the professional team behind the Ropemaker development. Ropemaker is a Mace project successfully delivered through a fully integrated service offer and acknowledged as one of the most sustainable new office developments in London with a BREEAM rating of "excellent".

More about Ropemaker

Ropemaker represents one of the most sustainable office developments London has seen to date.

Ropemaker's construction was designed with sustainability at its core, emitting 33% lower carbon emissions than required by Building Regulations. This is responsible for the building's BREEAM "Excellent" rating - achieved  by a design where all energy for heating water and providing air conditioning is derived from renewable sources, where all wood used is derived from sustainably managed sources and rainwater harvesting reduces mains water usage.

really interesting

really interesting roundtable, particularly the bits about the true carbon cost of some of the 'energy saving' techniques, would have loved to be a fly on the wall in there. Working for an office supplies company I'm always interested to hear what our clients and others are doing to make their offices or industrial businesses more sustainable.
