Mace appointed on Coronation Street and ITV moves to MediaCity UK | Mace
Following the completion of the land deal between ITV and Peel Group, Mace has been appointed as project and construction managers for the relocation of Coronation Street and ITV’s move to MediaCityUK in Manchester in 2012.
The stand alone facility for Britain’s best loved soap will be built on a 7.7 acre site at Trafford Wharf, adjacent to the Imperial War Museum North and accessed by a new bridge across the waterway to the main MediaCityUK complex.
Plans for the site alongside the historic Manchester Ship Canal include a new external film set – built to greater scale than before to equip the soap for the demands of future broadcasting developments, whilst also replicating the original appearance of Weatherfield. The production centre would also include two sound stage buildings, specialist production facilities and offices, dressing rooms and meeting space for production staff and cast.
Mace is further supporting ITV’s move as project managers for the fit-out of ITV’s space within the Orange Building at MediaCityUK, which will provide modern accommodation equipped with the latest technology for ITV Studios’ production and management teams, ITV regional news, and support staff from across the business.
Mace will now work with the design team to bring the proposed plans to life over the next two years, in time for ITV’s move at the end of 2012.
Rob Ewen, Director at Mace commented: “Coronation Street is an iconic brand and our appointment as both project and construction managers for the project to replicate the set and everything that makes Coronation Street work is just fantastic appointment. The Coronation Street Project will underpin the future development of our Manchester Office and we are delighted to have this opportunity to work with ITV on these exciting projects.”
