The Mace Group Board forms the strategic direction and leadership for the Mace organisation. Led by chairman and CEO, Stephen Pycroft, the six members are all owners of Mace following the management buyout of 2001.
Stephen Pycroft is Chairman and CEO of Mace. Having joined the company in 1993 and appointed a Group Board Director in 1995, Stephen led a management buyout of the company in 2001 and was appointed Chief Operating Officer before taking over as CEO at the end of 2004 and Chairman in 2008.
Under Stephen’s direction, Mace has become a £20M profit business achieving a 35% CAGR over the last six years. He has led the company to achieve phenomenal growth with turnover increasing from £90m in 2001 to £851m in 2010, whilst evolving the company into an international consultancy and construction group with an enviable reputation for quality and delivery and employing over 3,000 people worldwide.
Personally leading projects where Mace has the greatest opportunity to add impact and benefit for clients in new markets or when facing new challenges, Stephen’s vision of applying the original, core Mace values of collaborative, non-combative construction to every aspect and phase of the built environment is now a reality. This powerful combination of corporate vision and hands-on direction has led to the company’s expansion globally with clients in over 65 countries benefitting from the professionalism and innovation of the Mace approach.
As the company has grown so has its sense of responsibility to the wider community. Under Stephen’s leadership Mace has built one of the industry’s most sophisticated community regeneration and social inclusion services helping thousands of people into work and training whilst delivering projects for clients across the public and private sectors.
Mark joined the company in 1996 and was appointed deputy chief executive in December 2009. He has been a key member of the Group board since the management buy out of the company in 2001, and is responsible for the growth and success of the infrastructure sector.
In 2006, Mark was part of the CLM delivery partner consortium team that secured the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics role. He fulfilled the position of deputy programme director responsible for delivering the £8.1bn programme for the Olympic Delivery Authority.
Mark gained his early experience in the commercial sector on the Broadgate and Ludgate development projects in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and then moved on to projects with BAA. Mark was the director responsible for Terminal 5 and the BAA framework from 1996-2006.
Marcus is the international chief operating officer, an owner of Mace and is responsible for the company's international operations, which is currently managing in excess of $US20 billion worth of projects.
He has more than 20 years industry experience and has been responsible at project manager and director level for the successful completion of major retail, commercial, leisure and residential projects.
He was the project director on the Jumeirah Beach Residences project, the largest single phase residential development in the world. The 22 million square foot development incorporates 40 high rise towers and four levels of mixed use podium.
Marcus has played a key role in securing and subsequently developing successful partnering and joint venture agreements with three of the Middle East’s largest and most respected developers.
Mark is the chief operating officer for consultancy services at Mace. He joined Mace in 1992 and was made a director in January 1996. During this time he was responsible for the delivery of the £200m Waterside project for client British Airways. Throughout his career he has been driven by a desire to challenge conventional ways of doing things and to really make a difference to his clients’ businesses.
After Waterside, Mark was instrumental in setting up and establishing the company’s project management and consultancy business in the UK. By 2000 Mace had established a working relationship with 25% of the FTSE 100.
As part of the successful management buyout team in 2001, Mark was charged with establishing a UK presence for our consulting offer through regional offices and to drive Mace’s entry into the public sector where we now have an established business in education, regeneration, housing, healthcare and public estates. More recently Mark has been developing our corporate real estate partnerships and Mace’s entry into the North American market.
More recently Mark has been developing a strategy for our international cost consultancy business as well as growing our global facilities management capabilities through Macro, our FM business.
Gareth is the chief operating officer for construction at Mace. He started his professional career in design and build after a four year BSc in construction technology. He joined Mace in 1994, was promoted to director in 2001 and was invited to join the group board in 2003.
Gareth took a sabbatical from Mace between 1996 and 2000 during which time he was project director on the Royal Opera House millennium refurbishment. On completion of that project he returned to Mace and took operational control of the Merrill Lynch European headquarters project, the More London development and latterly the Terminal 5 project at Heathrow Airport, at the time the largest construction project in Europe.
Gareth's formal construction training together with much project management experience has given him a strong knowledge of the construction process from managing design teams through the design process to procurement, cost control and the construction and close out phases of projects.
Gareth was appointed to the Mace Board in December 2003 and in 2005 became group board director responsible for the construction management service offer, technology and aviation sector and two of the group’s sister-companies: Mace Logistics and the Mace Business School.
In January 2008 Gareth was appointed Chief Operations Officer responsible for our Construction business in the UK offering construction management and all contracting forms of contract.
Kath Knight joined Mace as human resources director in 1998 and is responsible for providing strategic advice to the group board in all areas of human resource management. Her remit covers domestic and international employment strategies, compensation and benefits, employee relations and employment law, learning and development and talent management, organisational development, resourcing and recruitment, diversity and equal opportunities, workforce and succession planning, employee wellbeing and occupational health and safety and performance management.
Kath has been a qualified HR practitioner for over 30 years and has worked in a very wide variety of roles, including employment law, payroll and benefits, training and development, industrial relations and recruitment. Kath is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Prior to joining Mace, Kath's experience was gained in the public sector working with a number of large local authorities including their outsourced commercial interests e.g. airports.
During her time at Mace, Kath has seen the company grow from 500 people across four locations to 3,000 based across the globe. She has played a critical part in ensuring that Mace have moved into the 21st century with HR policies and practises which lead the field.
David has held the role of Group Finance Director since joining Mace in 1997.
As Finance Director, David is responsible for the finance, ICT and facilities functions of the business. He is also sponsor for the ongoing Business Change Programme. His priorities are to manage the growth of the business and to ensure increased shareholder value through both cash and profit maximisation. He provides the financial input into strategic corporate decisions and assists the business units in resolving day to day financial issues as they arise. This includes project financing including bonds and PCGs, risk sharing frameworks and joint ventures, together with new areas of business activity.Increasingly David is using his contacts in the financial and business communities to develop leads and secure new opportunities for the Group.
David qualified as a chartered accountant in 1982 and then as a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1985.
Once qualified he joined Longcrofts and progressed to become a partner in 1990. In 1993 David joined Chantrey Vellacott, a 55 partner national practice, and was appointed head of audit and accounting in 1997.
David specialised in advising a fast growing entrepreneurial client base, dealing with a broad range of issues including fund raising, business planning, capital structures and performance improvement. He advised Mace on these and other issues for two years before joining the company in 1997.
