Construction Board

The construction board is responsible for the operational management of all construction services at Mace. The construction board is chaired by Gareth Lewis, COO of Construction, and has the following members:

Strategic Board

Gareth Lewis
COO, Construction

Gareth started his professional career in design and build after a  four year BSc in construction technology. He joined Mace in 1994, was  promoted to director in 2001 and was invited to join the group board in  2003.

Gareth took a sabbatical from Mace between 1996 and 2000 during which time he was project director on the Royal Opera House millennium refurbishment. On completion of that project he returned to Mace and took operational control of the Merrill Lynch European headquarters project, the More London development and latterly the Terminal 5 project at Heathrow Airport, at the time the largest construction project in Europe.

Gareth's formal construction training together with much project management experience has given him a strong knowledge of the  construction process from managing design teams through the design  process to procurement, cost control and the construction and close out  phases of projects.

Gareth was appointed to the Mace Board in December 2003 and in 2005 became group board director responsible for the construction management service offer, technology and aviation sector and two of the group’s sister-companies: Mace Logistics and the Mace Business School.
 
In January 2008 Gareth was appointed Chief Operations Officer responsible for our Construction business in the UK offering construction management and all contracting forms of contract.

Mark Castle
Managing Director, Construction

Mark is a member of the strategic board for construction and the director responsible for Mace’s public and private construction businesses.

Mark joined Mace in 2004 to establish and lead Mace Plus, the contracting arm of the Mace business. At the end of 2010 Mace Plus merged into the Mace brand in a move to bring the construction management and contracting strengths of the business together.

Mark began his career in the construction industry in 1981 as a commercial trainee with Mowlem and over the last 30 years has gained experience across various business disciplines including commercial,marketing and general management. Prior to joining Mace, Mark held senior roles at Wates Group and Structuretone Inc where he was managing director of individual companies or groups of businesses and his business experience includes working with both UK and USA based organisations.

The growth of the construction business since 2004 has been significant and Mark continues to lead his management teams in diversifying  its client base, markets and delivery offer. Mace's construction portfolio continues to expand across all sectors.

Mark represents Mace on the UKCG Forum and is Chairman of the Southern Board. Mark is also an active member of Critical Eye – the network of Business Leaders.

Nigel Cole
Director, Infrastructure and Aviation

Nigel joined Mace in 1996, was promoted to director in 2005, is the director responsible for infrastructure and aviation sectors and is a member of the Strategic Board for Construction.

Nigel commenced his career in the civil engineering design field before moving to site engineering, predominantly within the aviation industry. Since joining Mace nearly 12 years ago he has worked exclusively in the group's infrastructure sector with clients including BAA, British Airways, Dublin Airport Authority and most recently Birmingham International Airport.

Nigel has been involved in excess of 40 aviation projects the most notable being the Terminal 5 project at Heathrow, where Mace provided both construction management and contracting services. He was also project director for the successful £230m refurbishment of Heathrow Terminal 3 in 2004/5, where a complex portfolio of airside projects were delivered to the agreed success criteria.

Nigel's early design experience and subsequent project management roles have provided a strong understanding of the construction delivery process and an expertise in the delivery of aviation projects. Working within the aviation industry on a continuous basis has enabled him and his team to continually provide value through early involvement throughout the development process.

The success of the infrastructure sector and most notably the aviation construction group over the last 14 years has resulted in the establishment of an aviation specific business for 2008 which Nigel is heading up. Reporting to the Mace board, the aviation sector offers project and programme management, construction management, contracting and management contracting service.

James Harbord
Commercial Director

James joined Mace as a commercial director in June 2008, becoming a member of the Mace construction board. James has over 20 years experience in the construction industry during which he has spent his career within both the Design and Build sector and PFI sector.

 Having delivered complex projects for some extremely demanding private sector clients, James has more recently taken the commercial lead for delivering some major projects in the public sector delivering healthcare, education and custodial facilities. James has experience of fee-based, prime cost reimbursable, guaranteed maximum price and fixed price contracts, along with detailed knowledge of the different and varying demands and risks of each.

During his career James has also headed up procurement and cost planning functions and therefore has a wealth of experience at the front end of projects including the negotiations of complex contracts in both the UK and Europe.

James pays a great deal of attention to the whole of the construction process and emphasises the need for proactive commercial involvement throughout the project cycle which includes design, procurement and delivery phases. 

His experience drives him to encourage teams to plan and strategise before implementation on projects. James also believes in the integrated team approach with focus on delivery balanced with the design and commercial functions. James seeks to maximise value, efficiency and return through the teams he leads whilst fully satisfying the client's objectives and requirements.

Stephen Jeffery
Director, Specialist Services

Stephen Jeffery is a member of the strategic board for construction and the director responsible for specialist services, which encompasses mechanical and electrical engineering, logistics and the Business School.

Stephen is also responsible for our in-house engineering contracting company, Mace MEP.

Stephen joined Mace in 1996 and has worked on most types of engineering services projects with different forms of contract. He has successfully project managed and delivered projects in the commercial, residential and pharmaceutical sectors.

In 2002 Stephen became an operations director responsible for the M&E services team within Mace and was instrumental in establishing industry best practice process and procedures within the company and ensuring that the supply chain was also targeted to ensure consistency.

In 2004 Stephen became a director of Mace responsible for the M&E services delivery across the construction sector, which meant establishing a team structure which would generate in-house talent and ensure that consistent delivery would be maintained even though the diversity across the company was growing.

In 2006 Mace MEP was established, an M&E contracting delivery company whose main strategy is to follow tried and tested procedures founded through years of managing projects and transfer those skills to the installation arena.

Lee Penlington
Commercial Director

Lee began his career in the construction industry in 1988 as a trainee quantity surveyor with James Longley & Co and over the last 20 years has gained experience across most of the construction sectors, from heavy civil engineering to data centre fit outs.

Lee joined Mace in 1999 to establish the fixed price offer within the group, and led the commercial team successfully delivering numerous projects within both the public and private sector.

In 2003 Lee was appointed as a founding director of the Como business, Mace’s specialist fit out company. With his fellow directors Lee helped grow Como into one of the leading fit out companies within the UK. During this time Lee led the commercial team in delivering many high profile projects culminating in Nomura new European headquarters in London.

Subsequently Lee was asked in 2010 to join the Strategic Board with overall commercial responsibility for a number of the construction businesses, and in particular the formation of a residential service offer.

Steve Root
Managing Director, Como

Steve Root joined Mace in early 2005, is the managing director of Como, Mace's fit out contractor, and is a member of the Strategic Board for Construction.

Steve's primary responsibility is to ensure Como continues to grow and develop. He is tasked with leading to work with the best clients, produce the best quality product and employ the best people.

Steve has over thirty years experience in the fit out industry and has built up good work relationships with clients, professional teams and supply chain.

Catherine Button
Marketing & Communications Director

Cath is the Marketing and Communications Director for Mace and spearheaded the strategic marketing and communications plan which has supported the company's growth from £183m turnover in 2004 to £708m in 2009.

Cath is responsible for the company's global marketing and communications activities, including branding, market development, corporate communications, public relations, customer satisfaction and relationship management, research, competitive intelligence, creative services and reputation management.

When Cath joined Mace’s marketing and communications department in 2004 she set out a five year plan to build the company a fully comprehensive integrated marketing and communications function which would intelligently and creatively support the company’s growth into new markets and sectors. Cath’s approach synced with Mace’s core belief in taking its cues from other successful industries beyond traditional construction, aiming to be among the best-of-the-best in marketing and communications, just as in service delivery.

Cath and her in-house team were responsible for the group-wide rebrand of Mace in January 2008 in a move to reposition Mace as an international consultancy and construction company. Following this successful rebranding Cath became the youngest employee to be promoted to Operations Director in the company’s history.

Today Cath leads a team of 20 marketing and communications professionals to deliver the company's marketing strategy. A large part of her focus is on the importance of strategic internal communications to promote the brand values of Mace and engage its employees to build a worldwide team of client-focused ambassadors.

Cath read English and History at The University of Liverpool and caught the marketing and communications bug from her first graduate role as a researcher/writer for a student travel company in New York City.

Cath joined Mace in September 1999, moved into a full time marketing role in 2004, was named Head of Marketing and Communications in September 2006, promoted to Operations Director in July 2008 and to Director in December 2010.

Amy Chapman
Legal Director

Amy joined Mace in August 2003 and is the head of the Mace’s legal and insurance department. Amy is a solicitor and prior to joining Mace worked in private practice at Eversheds solicitors specialising in construction law.

Amy is responsible for the provision of advice and support to Mace on all legal and risk management issues. Amy also oversees the company’s insurance regime and monitors compliance with the terms of the company’s policies.

Her remit covers all aspects of construction law (procurement advice, contract negotiation, dispute resolution, bonds, guarantees and warranties) as well as joint ventures, leases, intellectual property and commercial contracts. She co-ordinates use of external legal resource where necessary, and also acts as the Group’s Data Protection Officer.

Phil Coutts
Director, Science and Technology

Phil is the director responsible for Mace's science and technology construction delivery and has been a member of the Construction Board since 2008.

With over 26 years experience in the construction industry, Phil has gained a reputation as a leader in the construction of high quality, complex and demanding projects against stringent timeframes. He has directed the construction of more than 1 million square feet of premium quality business critical space across Europe in the last five years, including three of the largest tier 3 / 4 data centre projects in Europe. In recent years he has presented on the application of modern construction techniques to data centre projects at the international Data Centre Dynamics conference in London.

Mace provides a full range of services to support its clients in technology related projects in the data centre, pharmaceutical, media, food processing and manufacturing sectors. Its success is underpinned by an intimate understanding of its client’s project and business needs, coupled with the sector / industry experience, technical knowledge and the leadership required to fulfil them.

Jonathan Foster
Director, Major Projects

Jonathan is a director of major projects, established in order to secure and deliver large, fixed price contracts. Current responsibilities include the overall project director role on Park House, together with a number of preconstruction studies for Land Securities and British Land.

Previously, Jonathan was responsible for the extremely successful, integrated management team on the £155m Ropemaker Place project for British Land, incorporating construction management, project management, cost consultant and fixed price logics. This followed the completion of More London Plot 4 in July 2006.

He joined Mace in April 2004 with almost 20 years experience in construction delivery on a wide range of projects. His first opportunity to lead a team on site came with the Round Tower Stabilization contract at Windsor Castle in 1990. Further high profile projects followed with the Queen's Stand at Epsom Racecourse and some of the earliest NEC contracts for BAA at Heathrow.

In 1996, Jonathan headed out to Hong Kong as one of the Project Managers on the $1 billion SuperTerminal 1 at the new Hong Kong International Airport. After delivering a manufacturing facility for IBM in Southern China, he was promoted to Operations Manager responsible for Gammon Skanska's business in Shanghai. Highly respected by a team of predominantly mainland Chinese staff, his role broadened to include marketing and tendering activities, as well as continuing to deliver projects for Lucent Technologies and Schindler amongst others.

Jonathan returned to Hong Kong as Senior Project Manager for Tradeport Logistics Centre and the DHL Asia Hub, both GMP projects at the airport. While operating in a fixed price environment and repeatedly exceeding profit expectations, Jonathan has consistently maintained a strong commitment to Partnering and an integrated team approach. He was instrumental in setting up the Hong Kong Construction Innovation initiative and was also involved in developing Gammon Skanska's corporate electronic project management system.

John Hanley
Director, Health and Safety

John is a chartered health and safety professional and a member of the Mace construction board. He joined Mace in 1994 and progressed to his current role as director in 2001.

He is the driving force behind the group's industry recognised environment, safety and health (ESH) track record and reputation and has developed a highly respected professional ESH team to support the business, projects and clients.

John is also the managing director of Mace Sustain, the consultancy arm of Mace providing ESH related performance improvement solutions to the marketplace including services on sustainability, behavioural safety, CDM coordination, social inclusion programmes, compliance, training and performance measurement.

Malcolm Hannon
Director, Logistics

Malcolm Hannon has been in construction for over 25 years; firstly as a quantity surveyor and more latterly as the project manager for the Heathrow Terminal 5 logistics package, where he brought numerous best value solutions to a unique British project. He has also managed construction logistics commissions in the open market.

As managing director of Mlogic Malcolm brings a distinctive practical knowledge of construction and construction processes which, allied to his commercial expertise, enables him to succeed in the challenges of construction logistics offering clients and projects best value solutions.

Neil Hennessey
Director, Retail

Neil is the construction director for mace construction retail business; with a wealth of experience gained in the retail sector over the last 16 years, successfully delivering projects and leading construction teams. Neil has and is working with blue chip clients such as Asda, Sainsbury's, John Lewis, Waitrose and Morrisons.

He has extensive experience managing projects and client accounts at a strategic level, where excellent communication and management skills are essential to consistently deliver the clients exacting requirements; in a manner which has generated repeat business by developing a collaborative and non adversarial approach.

As part of his role Neil actively promotes a proactive approach in exploring opportunities to deliver benefits to client accounts and schemes, particularly in buildability and programme efficiencies which are bespoke to the client’s requirements.

Neil's core skills are his communication skills, lateral thinking, enthusiasm, drive, professionalism coupled with a personnel approach. He has a proven track record of being a team player that integrates quickly with client teams and advocates an integrated team approach, which in turn drives a common goal of customer focus whilst adding real value to client’s projects

 

Kath Knight
Group Human Resources Director

Kath Knight joined Mace as human resources director in 1998 and is responsible for providing strategic advice to the group board in all areas of human resource management. Her remit covers domestic and international employment strategies, compensation and benefits, employee relations and employment law, learning and development and talent management, organisational development, resourcing and recruitment, diversity and equal opportunities, workforce and succession planning, employee wellbeing and occupational health and safety and performance management. 

Kath has been a qualified HR practitioner for over 30 years and has worked in a very wide variety of roles, including employment law, payroll and benefits, training and development, industrial relations and recruitment. Kath is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

Prior to joining Mace, Kath's experience was gained in the public sector working with a number of large local authorities including their outsourced commercial interests e.g. airports. 

During her time at Mace, Kath has seen the company grow from 500 people across four locations to 3,000 based across the globe. She has played a critical part in ensuring that Mace have moved into the 21st century with HR policies and practises which lead the field. 

Brian Moone
Director, Business School

As Operations Director of the Mace Business School Brian has been responsible for the development and delivery of a successful management training programme for the Mace preferred Trade Contractors. Since its inception in January 2006 it has trained an average of 350 managers a year from within the supply chain providing Mace and its supply chain a leading edge over its competitors. the achievements of the business school were recognised by the industry when it received the highly acclaimed Building Award for Integrated Supply Chain of the Year in 2010.

Building on the success of the business school Brian has developed a range of courses for Mace partners and clients in the UK and overseas.

Brian has represented the Mace Business School at National conferences and events both in the UK and overseas. He currently has two regular articles in the Building Magazine reporting on supply chain lead times and he is a judge for Construction News Specialist Contractor Awards.

Brian has wide industry experience, having worked in both the private and public sector in various roles including Project Management. Before joining Mace he was the Chief Executive of Construction Best Practice and a Board Director of Rethinking Construction and more recently a Director within Constructing Excellence. He was responsible for leading the industry change agenda set out by Sir John Egan. As Director of Construction Best Practice he was a member of the Strategic Forum for Construction under Sir John Egan during the drafting of Accelerating Change and latterly under Peter Rogers.

Prior to joining Construction Best Practice Brian was Director of Professional Services at the Chartered Institute of Building, where he was responsible for the development of professional members. He was involved in the development of "Adjudication" under the Construction Act and the role out of Latham report Constructing the Team. He was Treasurer to the European Council for Building Professionals a pan European body providing representation on behalf of Construction Management throughout Europe.

He has also been a tutor and examiner on the Final Year RICS Diploma course for the College of Estate Management covering Technology, Economics and Law. He is also a visiting Lecturer at Reading University on their Construction Masters Programme. He has also lectured at South Bank University and Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

Terry Spraggett
Director, Education, Health, Public Estates

Terry Spraggett joined Mace Plus as construction director in May 2005 and is a member of the Mace construction board.

With 25 years experience in main contracting, Terry has worked extensively across all markets in both the private and public sector. His reputation is based on his ability to form and maintain excellent client relationships and successfully deliver quality projects on time and to budget.

He is known in the industry for his honesty, cool head under pressure and no-nonsense approach to facing and dealing with issues as they arise.

Simon Underwood
Director, Residential, Hotels
